Dragons Lair

This now needs a page of it's own. Originally I had it under the "experiences" page of my arcade section but I really need to break it out and give it the space it is due. Last week I was at Philly Classic 5. And for the first time in about 10 years I was able to play the "Real" Dragon's Lair arcade game. Yes I have had the DVD ROM versions for the last 2 years. And yes I did buy the 20th anniversary box set of the real DVD's but they don't compare the that 20 year old laserdisc player in an arcade cabinet with the totally ignored scoring :)

Minute details like the way the picture twitched while it was switching scenes really do change the experience. And since I have actually played with real money and beat the game I can recall what it was like. The DVD version took me about an hour to beat in hard mode. (Oh Yeah, I forgot the Playstation 2 is a slow DVD :) But last week when I was trying to play the arcade game the timing was completely different. It took me about 10 minutes just to get past the first few scenes. I was almost embarrassed.

I had seen Dragon's lair a few times but it wasn't until 1984 that I really got into it. I had a field service job with a company car and the local office was in Lionville PA. Not far from the Exton Square Mall. For the first few months there was a lot of down time and there was a nice arcade at that mall. There during the day there was no long lines of people trying to play Dragon's Lair. And the price dropped down to a quarter a play. So for the next 3 months I was there a few days a week playing and each time I played Dragon's lair I got further and further. I was so close to the end. As far as I knew I was ready to face the Dragon.
